Overview

Established in 2016, the Leadership Lab for New Heads is an innovative and individualized program focused exclusively on supporting new heads of independent schools. The six-month, intensive learning experience offers a comprehensive and tailored approach to preparing heads for a successful transition and tenure in their new characters.

In contrast to a single summer conference or workshop, the Leadership Lab is designed to provide sustained and interactive learning, beginning in the spring and extending through the first half of the academic year. We combine research-based leadership learning and organizational design theory with the application of critical management skills to prepare heads for a successful entry into their new schools. We support this work with executive coaching, empowering new heads to focus on the strategic goals, organization and outcomes that will have the greatest impact on their schools.

Our curriculum is personalized: we align leadership development with personal values and ground the learning in practice, critique and reflection. The first phase of the work involves building the “entry plan”. Then, as new Heads move into their new roles and begin to execute the plan, we actively support them with direct feedback and coaching. The program includes an accelerated early learning plan; a three-day summer workshop designed for deep reflection, collaboration and planning; ongoing executive coaching; and a mid-year convening—all within the context of a small, professionally connected cohort of no more than six participants.

Program Information:

The six-month program fee is $6,500. The fee includes an accelerated learning program, participation in Leadership Labs 1 and 2, and six hours of executive coaching sessions over the course of the program. This fee does not include travel or hotel lodging. The three-day 2017 Summer Lab will take place the week of July 11 at Dolce, located at a beautiful retreat setting in Norwalk, CT.
